Summary:
This lesson will introduce the sun to first graders. The class will hear a shared reading story called, Our Very Own Star:The Sun in order to provide background knowledge about the sun. Then, students will apply what they have learned and create a photo story to explain the importance of the sun.
Tasks:
Day One:
1. Students will listen to the story, Our Very Own Star: The Sun.
2. Students will discuss with their partner what they learned about the sun.
3. Students will ask their partner, "why is the sun important?"
4. A class discussion will take place about the importance of the sun.
5. Make a class list reporting student responses. Title the list "The sun is important because..."
Day Two:
1. Introduce the tool "photo story."
2. Show students how to google search images of the sun,etc.
3. Model how to put together a photo story.
Day Three:
1. Review the class list "The sun is important because..."
2. Students work with their partner to create a photo story, summarizing the importance of the sun.

I will create a rubric to evaluate the photo-stories.
